A team of physicists at JILA, a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado at Boulder, has used ultrafast lasers to look at atoms during collisions lasting just half a picosecond (trillionth of a second). And they were able to confirm the theory that atoms -- like tennis balls -- "briefly lose form and energy when they hit something." These results will help them to better understand other laws of physics at the atomic level. Read more...
