I ran a similar column on June 1, 2002, "Eight Technologies That Will Change the World." This new list has some things in common, like nanotechnology or quantum computing applications. Some are different, like the "Software Assurance."

In this special section, Technology Review’s editors have identified 10 emerging technologies that we predict will have a tremendous influence in the near future. For each, we’ve chosen a researcher or research team whose work and vision is driving the field. The profiles, on the following pages, offer a sneak preview of the technology world in the years and decades to come.

Here is the full list.

Wireless Sensor Networks
Injectable Tissue Engineering
Nano Solar Cells
Mechatronics
Grid Computing
Molecular Imaging
Nanoimprint Lithography
Software Assurance
Glycomics
Quantum Cryptography

You also can read the print version (15 pages).
