1996–97 Phoenix Suns Season

The 1996–97 Phoenix Suns season was the 29th season of the Phoenix Suns in the National Basketball Association (NBA). After an 0–8 start, coach Cotton Fitzsimmons was replaced by former Suns guard Danny Ainge, who led the team to a 40–34 finish. As the seventh seed in the Western Conference, the Suns faced the Seattle SuperSonics in the first round of the Playoffs, losing 2–3 in a closely contested series.

The season was marked by a number of major trades. In the offseason, superstar forward Charles Barkley was traded to the Houston Rockets for Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Mark Bryant and Chucky Brown. Cassell was later traded, alongside Michael Finley and A. C. Green, to the Dallas Mavericks for future-superstar Jason Kidd, Loren Meyer and Tony Dumas. Robert Horry was also traded, along with Joe Kleine, to the Los Angeles Lakers for former Suns forward Cedric Ceballos and Rumeal Robinson.

Famous quotes containing the words suns, phoenix and/or season:

I lived for a long time under vast porticos
That maritime suns tinted with a thousand fires,
And whose great pillars, straight and majestuous
In the evening made seem like basaltic caves.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)

And there’s a score of duchesses, surpassing womankind,
Or who have found a painter to make them so for pay
And smooth out stain and blemish with the elegance of his mind:
I knew a phoenix in my youth, so let them have their day.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

The art of medicine in the season lies:
Wine given in season oft will benefit,
    Which out of season injures.
    Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso)
